Braces are the go-to method for most teeth straightening challenges. Why? Because they work. New methods, materials, and innovations have changed the way that braces look and feel over the years. But no matter what form they take, braces are proven orthodontic technology that dates back almost 200 years.
However, braces aren't necessarily right for everyone. There are other options and alternatives that can also be used for straightening teeth.
Invisible braces
So-called invisible braces, produced and marketed by several manufacturers under different trade names, usually consist of retainer-like tooth alignment devices made of clear plastic. In addition to being much less visible when worn, orthodontic appliances of this type can be removed by the wearer, which facilitates eating, teeth cleaning, and other activities. These systems can also provide faster results than traditional braces in some situations. The trade off for these advantages is a higher cost, and the risk of losing or damaging an appliance while it is removed from the mouth. For these reasons, invisible braces are mostly utilized for adult patients.
Removable appliances
Removable orthodontic appliances are made of clear plastic or more traditional materials, and can be used to correct certain types of malocclusions (misaligned teeth), particularly those which are relatively mild. These devices can be more comfortable and less costly than traditional braces, and produce fast results.
Dental veneers
A veneer is a thin layer of composite or dental porcelain placed over and bonded to the surface of a tooth to give it an improved appearance. Dental veneers may be a treatment option for a patient that has misaligned teeth, especially when the teeth are worn, fractured, discolored, or there are gaps between the teeth which may be difficult to eliminate with orthodontic treatment. Dental veneers can produce very fast results - a complete smile makeover can be done in as little as a week or so. However, veneers can be very expensive, averaging from $1,000 to $3,000 per tooth.
Dental contouring
Like dental veneers, tooth reshaping -- sometimes called dental contouring -- is another type of nearly instant treatment now available. A cosmetic dentist studies the teeth and plans a treatment strategy with the aid of X-rays. He or she then sculpts the teeth by removing enamel with a specialized drill, laser, and sanding strips. A bonding material may also be applied to the teeth and further shaped. This procedure can make teeth appear more straight, and also minimize or eliminate the unsightly appearance of chipped or cracked teeth. This process is relatively expensive on a per-tooth basis, and is usually best for patients that have only a few problem teeth, particularly the front teeth.
