Many patients avoid getting braces because they have heard some common myths and now have some fear of the orthodontist or the actual process of getting braces. We've put together a list of the most common myths and the facts behind them to help alleviate any concerns you might have about getting braces, either as an adult or young person.
Myth: I Am Too Old for Braces
Fact: You are never too old to take charge of your oral health and obtain the smile you've always wanted. We have had patients of all ages wearing braces, even well into their senior years. In fact, in many cases, adults do better with braces than adolescents. Adults realize the value of good oral health and a beautiful smile. They are committed to taking good care of their braces so they can have a great smile and be finished with treatment as quickly as possible.
Myth: People Will Make Fun of Me
Fact: In days gone by, there were many taunts for those who wore braces. These days, more and more patients are wearing braces, retainers and other devices to help straighten teeth and realign jaws. Braces on folks young and old is no longer an uncommon sight. Many people won't even notice that you have braces. Others will be envious, and still others will empathize. Plus, you will only wear braces for a few years, and once they are off, you will hardly remember what it was like getting braces.
Myth: Braces Are Too Expensive
Fact: Braces are not cheap, for sure. However, they are a worthy investment, and you are very deserving of a beautiful smile. There are many payment options that make getting braces more affordable than ever before. You should contact your dental or medical insurance provider first to see what coverage you have, if any. If your insurance won't cover all of the cost, you can look into a loan or an account with GE's Care Credit. You can make easy, affordable payments with little to no interest charges.
Myth: My Braces Will Rust
Fact: Brackets and wires used in braces are made of stainless steel, which absolutely does not rust. Other components, such as ligatures and rubber bands are made of rubber or plastic, which also poses no threat to your teeth and mouth. So no worries here!
Myth: My Braces Will Set Off Metal Detectors
Fact: Again, this one is not true. Your braces won't set off any metal detectors at school, work, entertainment venues or airports, so you are good to go anywhere without fear of tripping sensors or setting off sirens.
Myth: No Kissing with Braces
Fact: You can kiss your significant other when you have braces. In fact, you can kiss another person that also has braces. You may have to be careful that one or both of you doesn't get nicked by hardware, but you aren't going to get stuck together or have to go to an emergency room or the orthodontist for help.
